A word to anyone considering purchasing a MkIV Golf or GTI: make ABSOLUTELY SURE that both high beam bulbs are new, and when one goes out, just sell the car. It's not worth the stress of changing them.

LOL. I don't know what it is like on the MKIV, but I have replaced by the headlights on my MkV, and I don't know that I have ever been so frustrated about such a (seemingly) minor car maintenance item. I was also SHOCKED by the price of the bulbs. Apparently they are made of platinum plated diamonds or something...

Well, let's put it this way: I decided to ignore the advice of everyone who said "Just pull the bumper, it's easier," and it took me two hours, ruining a bulb in the process.

I've got a MkIV Golf, and have changed my share of bulbs. For the driver's side, I believe the manual actually tells you to take it to the shop since it practically requires you to pull the battery. Never had to change the high beams, though. Knock on wood.

Everything but the high beam looks pretty easy to me. At least you can see what you're doing with them/actually fit your hand through the hole. The high beams have a much smaller access hatch, some tubing or the battery in the way, and you can't see anything. No fun.
